Description

Are you a beginner or advanced artist looking for a refresher on how to use graphite?  Are you interested in learning more about how to push values, and create depth, in your pencil portraits?

In this course we will be going back to the basics and building a foundation by creating depth and a range of values with pencil. Pencils are a wonderful medium due to the fact that they are easily transportable, easy to clean up and wonderfully dynamic because of the variety of the soft to hard graphite available. We will be discussing how to use the pencils, how to sketch the face using spatial relationships and creating shapes that build somewhat of a map of the face that we will use as a guide to place our areas of light and dark. It really is all about seeing and breaking down and building up. I’m looking forward to creating together with these wonderful tools!

By the end of this course, you will have an understanding of the following concepts:

  • Explore the range in pencils
  • Create a value scale to get a visual on the depth that can be achieved by using a variety of pencils.
  • Sketch a sphere with a range of values to create volume and the look of roundness. It’s all about creating the illusion.
  • Create value and depth in a portrait sketch.
  • See the face as a breakdown of shapes that create a map. When shadow and light are applied to the shapes, the face comes to life.
  • Explore different portrait angles.

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

WARM UP - THE SPHERE

For our warm up exercise we will be sketching a sphere. As an intro to the application of values to be used on our sphere, I will first show you how to create a value scale that we will all sketch on our paper. We will use a variety of pencils.  When creating a range of darks and lights on our sphere we can use our value scale as a touchstone to reference to. We’re really going to break it down and build a foundation to use as a guide for our portraits.

LESSON 1 - FRONTAL PORTRAIT

IMG_1566

In our first lesson we will be sketching a front facing portrait. I will break down the shapes in space discussing how to use spatial relationships as a way to see and be guided in you placement of lines and features. I like to see the sketching process as a camera coming into focus where we first start by loosely placing our lines and features in and then bringing them into focus by sharpening the details. Once the basic face is sketched we will map out the shapes of our shadows, which we will then fill in with our first pass of pencil. From here we will continue to push back the values by adding depth using softer pencils while allowing the lights to come forward to create dynamic dimension.

LESSON 2 - THE 3/4 PORTRAIT

In our second lesson, we will be using the same pencil techniques as the first lesson, but this time we will be sketching a face at a three quarter angle. This is a fun angle to learn because it is very expressive and has a beautiful feeling of aliveness and movement. I will lead you through the process of sketching out the face once again using a simple grid if you’d like to or not if you feel you don’t. I will discuss foreshortening and angles and how each piece must relate to create a believable portrait on an angle.

LESSON 3 - THE PROFILE

profile1

I love to sketch profiles and I’m excited to break it down for you in lesson 3. I will show you what to look for and what to pay attention to when sketching the profile. We will once again be using the same pencil techniques to this time learn to create a believable profile sketch. Again, it’s all about the illusion, like Magic! Through a step-by-step process our portrait will come to life. We will have fun! This one is going to bring us even further into depth and that’s my intention…to keep pushing!

FINAL APPLICATION LESSON

In this last lesson I will be sharing a video of me creating a piece from start to finish sped up. Don’t worry, you won’t have to hear me talk here! I just want to share my process in a variety of ways so that it clicks for you.

I will be opening the door to my process here when I get very present and allow the image to come through using all of the techniques I taught in this course.

MEET LAUREN RUDOLPH - ARTIST/INSTRUCTOR

Creativity has been the purest connection to my inner and outer world for as long as I can remember. As a child I sat and drew constantly my favorite subject of choice, faces. There is something about a portrait that pulls me in. I am fascinated by emotions and the human experience. My desire is to feel a complete engagement with my subject and tell their story.

Being an art teacher combines both of my loves, creativity and connection. I have taught in both public and private school. In 2011 I opened a home based studio for children called the Little Light Art Studio.

The name was inspired by the gospel song, “This Little Light Of Mine” which expresses the truth that we all contain a light within that is meant to shine. I love to teach private lessons, courses online and in person. I am so grateful to teach classes at a wondeful agency who’s mission is to support and provide many services to people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities.

Art is my true life force expression. When I am in the zone and my energy is flowing, magical things happen. I feel at peace, open and whole. I feel very blessed to do this work and to be an artist. My life like my art is a work in progress, ever evolving. I look forward to where the path may lead.

When I started my art journey, I made a point of looking for styles and artists that promised I’d never have to use a pencil because drawing was not part of the process. This wasn’t because I didn’t want to draw, it was because I was sure I couldn’t draw and make it look good. It was Lauren Rudolph’s class, Pushing The Values that made me realize I could in fact draw and make it look wonderful. Her instruction is very complete. She takes you step by step through the process. She provides everything you need: detailed written instruction, step-by-step videos and the reference material that insures you’ll be successful.
If you avoid drawing and have fear of the pencil, put those worries aside. This class will change your opinion of what you can accomplish and give the skills and confidence to do great things.

  2. Lucy Bradley-Springer (verified owner)

This was a great class – I was just one notch above beginner when I took the class and Lauren was ready and willing to give me extra assistance. I’ve been able to apply what I learned in other courses and am so happy I took the course.

  3. Cally Taylor (verified owner)

Brilliant class, I’ve learned so much about how to build up layers of shadow, gradually darkening the darks and looking for the light. My ability to draw a realistic face has leapt exponentially as a result of this course. I can’t recommend it enough.
