Description

ARE YOU TIRED OF FEELING SCARED ABOUT PAINTING THE BODY?  WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN A FREE, LOOSE APPROACH, THAT WILL GIVE YOU CONFIDENCE IN PAINTING FIGURES?

I truly love painting faces and figures and believe that they are the most wonderful way to express so much emotion. I also believe anyone can paint expressive figures.  However, many people are afraid to attempt the figure because of preconceived fears of the need for structure, measuring, anatomy, proportion, accuracy and realism.  In this class, I will show you a more freeing, loose approach to figure painting. This course is not about Photorealism or academic studies, rather an expressive, engaging, emotional and dare I say it..a FUN approach!

MORE ABOUT THIS COURSE

FLUID FIGURES is not a traditional or conventional approach to painting the body.  In this class, we learn to break free from that need for realism. We will embrace the imperfections and find our own interpretation of the figure. We will not spend hours studying anatomical references, measuring, studying foreshortening or perspective.  We will feel our way, use our senses, work intuitively and often very loosely to see where the paint wants to take us.

I work Big, Brushy, Loose and Painterly and I encourage all of these things.  Fill the paper, fill the canvas, fill the page! Find your confidence to express yourself fully.  Break the need for preciousness, it is not always about the finished piece. I encourage you to paint over old work, paint over previous exercises, just try again, and again, and again.

DESCRIPTION OF LESSONS

LESSONS 1 AND 2

Our first lesson will be a short lesson that focuses on gestural painting, continuous line and mark making. We will use timed exercises to prove that a lot can be achieved in a very short time.  Lesson two will focus on refinement of gestural lines.  We will also practice finding the fluidity and grace of the figure.

PicMonkey Collage(16)

LESSONS 3, 4, AND 5

In lesson three we will learn to see lights and darks, and learn the importance of tonal values and negative space (and a lesson on just let what happens, happen!)  This is a short study.  In lesson 4 we will have another quick study on abstraction and distortion.  We will learn to lose the lines, and not to worry about relying on outlines!  Lesson 5 we will study unconventional skin tones, proving it doesn’t all need to be flesh coloured.

LESSONS 6 AND 7

The main focus of both lessons 6 and 7 will be hands!  Yes, hands!  I know that drawing and painting hands can be daunting for so many.  In lesson 6, I will share with you some simple steps to creating expressive hands.  These steps will give you some confidence.  Then in lesson 7, we will paint several expressive hands!  We will use what we have learnt about hands and take it to the next level.

LESSON 8 AND 9

Lessons 8 and 9 will have us moving in to new concepts!  We will now explore the idea of including more than one figure in our work, and how the figures interact with one another in a painting.  Lesson 9 will have us experimenting with bold colors!  A striking pose with a striking palette!

LESSON 10

In our final lesson, we will be studying how to create an emotional message through texture, colour, and scale.  We will create a piece with more than one figure, and several hands.  All of the lessons up to this point will come together as we create this final, emotional, figurative piece!

MEET EMMA PETITT - ARTIST/CREATIVE GUIDE

“Creative Fluidity means to constantly change.
Forge your own way forward. Find your own flow”

-Emma Petitt

My name is Emma Petitt, and I am a Brit living in Southern Spain.  My partner Paul, our 2 rescue dogs and numerous chickens, ducks and I live in the mountains surrounded by nature.

I took up painting 3 years ago after our move to Spain.  I certainly had an epiphany moment, having not picked up a paintbrush in over 25 years.  Even though I went to art school in the 80’s and early 90’s, I never studied painting.  It did not take me long to realize my creative passion laid with faces, figures and people. I love to
portray emotion, hidden memories, stories and lives. I will never grow tired of painting people, they
have so much to tell.

I took the plunge, gave up my job and became a full time artist in 2017…and here I am now.  I have now been involved in numerous exhibitions in Spain and Online. My work has found new homes in- The USA, Canada, Britain, Germany, Holland, Australia and Spain.

I am finding my own way artistically, every day, I may not always know the correct terminology, I may not always use the correct tool for the job, but I am finding my own techniques, my own style and my own identity.  And it is never too late to start!  I work in Acrylic Paint, in an expressive, painterly manner, I love colour, texture and working BIG!

PRIVATE GROUP JUST FOR YOU!

This course will have a private Facebook group just for you!  I will be actively involved with the class via Facebook during the four weeks that the course is open!  I am really excited about working through these exercises with each of you!

Wonderful class. Emma is very clear and down to earth. I love this class. Great value for the amount of teaching and materials

  2. Shirley Gordon (verified owner)

Do yourself a favor and take this course if you have been balanced on the edge of leaping into figurative painting but hesitant to try. Emma’s energetic, fun filled approach to teaching will encourage you to sling paint joyfully onto large paper with big brushes. Her style captures the grace and beauty of female form, and includes a variety of mediums and mark making. Emma’s lessons are non traditional in anatomy and proportion, but produce strong women with character and confidence. Her ongoing monologue with herself as she leads us through the challenges of body form, gestures, poses, unconventional palettes and composition is delightful! And, Emma does not give us a pass on painting hands. She refuses to let us hide them behind backs or “off canvas”. Instead she provides an outstanding tutorial that shows a simplified method and then proceeds to include multiple hands prominently in paintings. Emma is such an inspiration, and Fluid Figures is fabulous! Be forewarned…after watching Emma enthusiastically cheer you toward big and loose, you may never again paint with a small brush! Thank you, Emma, for an amazing adventure, and, Kara, for bringing her course to us. An all time favorite!

  3. Pamela Vosseller (verified owner)

This is a must course if you are trying to loosen up, trying to create freely and fearlessly. No prior experience needed. If you are an established artist, this is a course that will push you to a new level in your art journey. Emma’s teaching style is contagious and inspiring. Excellent, fun, and addictive class.

  4. Ileana Prosper Holman (verified owner)

Emma’s style is relaxed, forgiving and intuitive. She’s a wonderful artist and teacher and this is more than a class on how to paint the female figure. It not at all technical but more expressive and fun. She takes you step by step through her process with lots of tips and techniques, which works for the very beginner to the more experienced artist. I’m loving where my art is going and part of it has to do with the experiments I tried in this class. Highly recommended for more abstract and emotional artwork.

  5. Jen Hughes (verified owner)

I’m not even finished with the course and I’ve learned more in three lessons than I did in a whole semester of college figure drawing!! Emma’s approach to teaching is to make the process fun, unassuming, easy-to-follow and meaningful…and you get great results in the end! All of my lessons are going in frames! I’m so excited to use these new techniques going forward! Thank you, Emma!
